Roland Hill Ltd - 2009

  • 12-22-2009

As 2009 has finished and 2010 starts, at Roland Hill Ltd we would like to take the opportunity to tell you of our highlights in 2009 and also looking forward to 2010.

We hope you find this interesting and if anything raises questions regarding projects you
are involved in please get in touch.

Zero-Carbon School Extension
We have been awarded the contract for the design of a zero carbon school extension for Northumberland County Council, using Passiv Haus principles. This will be manufactured using the EnviroHomes volumetric concept. Using this method ensures the whole building will be manufactured, virtually finished, in our assembly shop at Aspatria. Following this we will transport it to site for final installation, the building being water tight in 2-3 days.

Some of the building features will be:

  • Exceptional U-values for wall, floors and roof.
  • Passive ventilation and triple glazed windows and doors.
  • 6kW vertical axis wind turbine.
  • 2.5kWp of solar photovoltaic array.
  • 4m2 solar thermal heating to augment the DHW supplied by air source heat pump, which will also provide the building space heating
  • A mixture of LED and low voltage lighting, which has advanced controls for both presence
  • detection and lighting levels.

Mixture of green and zinc standing seam roofs.

Heating Systems
We are experiencing a huge increase of interest in installing heating systems that can reduce running costs and carbon emissions. We have fitted the adjacent air source heat pump system to a 360m2 office complex. The offices used to be heated using individual fan heaters, this was very expensive and difficult to control. The result was less than optimum conditions for staff working within the offices. Since installation, using a radiator distribution system, the running costs have been cut significantly. Added to this the working conditions are improved greatly over those previously experienced.

We have had on test and been monitoring a domestically sized air source heat pump for the last 12 months. This has resulted in running cost for the year of £470 / annum, for both heating and domestic hot water. This fitted to a 90m2 two bedroom bungalow.

Central Governments Retrofit for the Future Competition
We were successful in winning through to phase 1 of this Technology Strategy Board competition. The competition looks at innovative ways of substantially reducing carbon emissions in existing housing. A total of 190 bids were successful through out the whole of the UK. Roland Hills won the most of any single company in the UK and were successful with 10 bids, eight in Cumbria and two in the North East. We are the only company to have been successful in the competition in Cumbria.

Our designs have resulted in, on average, an 82% reduction in carbon emissions vs the average 1990 emissions. Phase 2 of the competition, to be announced in January, could see us taking these designs through to implementation, during 2010. We are partnering with two housing associations in Cumbria and two in the North East.

To achieve the reduction in emissions we have used number of strategies. These include:

  1. The use of vacuum insulation panels in both walls and floors.
  2. The use of Nanopore internal insulation for walls where exterior insulation is not possible
  3. EnviroPod heating systems. This uses off peak electricity, heat pumps and thermal stores to give a very low running cost system especially in off gas situations.
  4. Siamesed exhaust air heat pump and combi-gas boiler. This gives all, or a base load for, the space heating from the heat pump in conjunction with a 24kW boiler. The boiler instantaneously heats the water and can supplement the heating

Other 2009 News in Brief

Roofing Division
To further support our many clients we have launched our own roofing division. This was one of the few major disciplines that, up to now, was not carried out in house. We can now offer all forms of complete roofing services. This can be from repairs to re-roofs or new build roofs. We can carry out all the associated joinery and lead work to complement your final roofing solution. We have people who are experienced in working in tiles, traditional slates, flat or metal roofs and green roof systems.

Renewable Energy / Sustainable Construction Division
Sustainable construction methods, energy conservation and renewable energy is now a major talking point. Roland Hill are at the fore front of technologies in this area. We can offer advice and products that are not only cost effective but towards the cutting edge of technology. We can offer CPD presentations on how adopting a sustainable approach can help and compliment your organisation.

Web Site
Early in 2009 we launched our web site to give a better idea of services that we can offer. If you have not visited the site then either search for Roland Hill or type in

STOP PRESS - News for 2010

  • Our new factory for assembling EnviroHomes modular buildings will be opened in January. This facility is nearly 1000m2 of purpose built assembly space.
  • Our new domestic heating system, EnviroPod, will be launched during the first quarter of 2010. This is based on an MCS approved heat pump, and purpose designed and built thermal stores. It should allow the average 3 bed house to be heated for less than £1 per day.
  • With our sister company—EnviroHomes we will be exhibiting at Ecobuild at Earls Court in London. The dates for this are 2nd to 4th March. If you are able to make the event please come and see us at stand 1275.
