The North East is unique in Europe as the only region to completely sign up to the EU Covenant of Mayors, committing us to exceed 2020 reduction targets and beyond. This is challenging but brings with it opportunities to access funding and to raise the profile of the region. Delivery of this requires us all to support local authorities in their programmes and to engage local communities with positive messages and calls to action. The Energy Saving Trust is supporting Climate NE and the Association of North East Councils in putting together effective communication campaigns to set out clearly the positive actions being taken in the region. I hope that all our partners will contribute to these campaigns and that we can  overcome the dangers of cynicism.
