Start with your roof, not a savings promise
Roof direction, pitch, usable space and shading affect how much electricity a system can produce. South-facing roofs can work well, but east-west layouts are also worth assessing: they spread generation across more of the day. Trees, chimneys, dormers and neighbouring buildings can change the design. A property-specific survey is more reliable than guessing from the number of panels that fit.
What affects solar payback in Dorset?
Payback depends on the installed price, annual generation, the proportion of electricity you use yourself, import tariffs, export arrangements and future electricity prices. A household using more electricity during daylight hours may benefit differently from one where everyone is out until evening. Be cautious of quotes that assume every generated kilowatt-hour saves the full retail electricity price.
Ask your installer to show the assumptions behind annual generation, self-consumption, export income and battery performance. A range of outcomes is more useful than a single guaranteed payback date.
Should you add a battery?
A home battery can store some surplus daytime solar generation for later use. It may also be possible to charge at cheaper off-peak rates, depending on the equipment and tariff. But the right capacity is not simply the biggest one available. Oversizing can increase the upfront cost without giving the same proportional benefit. Battery recommendations should consider evening usage, expected surplus generation and your tariff.
What about coastal homes and older roofs?
Homes around Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Weymouth can have different exposure and roof materials. A survey should consider fixing points, wind exposure, roof condition, access and the suitability of mounting components for the environment. If your roof needs repairs soon, it is sensible to assess that before panels are installed.
Questions to ask before accepting a quote
- What annual generation is estimated, and what assumptions were used?
- Which panels, inverter and battery are specified, and why?
- How are shading, roof condition and safe access addressed?
- What paperwork, network notifications and handover documents are included?
- What happens if the roof or electrical installation needs additional work?
EnviroHomes designs solar and battery systems around the property rather than a fixed package. You can explore our solar design process, view real installations, or request a home survey.
